Liège – view of the city

Why Liège matters in European logistics

Few cities of its size have three freight gateways at once. The port of Liège on the Meuse and the Albert Canal is usually ranked as the third-largest inland port in Europe, behind Duisburg and Paris, with direct waterway links to Antwerp and Rotterdam. North of the city, the Trilogiport multimodal platform on the Albert Canal transfers cargo between barge, rail and truck and is surrounded by large distribution warehouses.

West of the city, Liège Airport at Bierset handles little passenger traffic but is Belgium's largest cargo airport and among the five largest in Europe. It specialises in express parcels, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, perishables and live animals, and much of what lands there continues by truck across the continent, including to Central Europe.

Goods we move from the Liège region to Czechia

For two centuries the Meuse valley was a centre of coal mining and steelmaking. The blast furnaces are gone, but steel sheet is still rolled and coated in the region, supported by engineering firms. Newer sectors have grown alongside. Typical loads for Czech and Slovak consignees include:

  • coated steel sheet, coils and metal semi-finished products,
  • aero-engine components, precision-machined parts and machinery components,
  • biotech and pharmaceutical products, often temperature-controlled,
  • airfreight released at the airport and e-commerce stock from regional warehouses,
  • containers and bulk goods brought upriver from Antwerp and Rotterdam,
  • regional food and drink such as Liège pear-and-apple syrup, Herve cheese, beer and Ardennes mineral water.

In the other direction, Czech machinery, glass, paper, plastics and building components travel to Liège distribution centres, which then serve Benelux and northern France.

Route, distance and transit time

Liège lies roughly 820 km from Prague by road. Trucks take the D5 via the Rozvadov/Waidhaus crossing to Nuremberg and Frankfurt. From there one option runs via Cologne and Aachen into Belgium on the E40; the other crosses the Eifel past Prüm and St. Vith on the E42, entering Liège from the east via Verviers. We choose the second when the Cologne motorway ring is congested. A full load with a single driver normally reaches Prague on the second working day. Because Liège sits on the E25 and E42 corridors, collections combine easily with Maastricht, only 30 km north, or with Luxembourg to the south.

Handling steel, pharma and dangerous goods

Steel coils need a trailer with a coil well and proper securing; bundled sheet must be strapped and loaded by crane or a forklift of adequate capacity, so please send piece weights in advance. For pharmaceuticals we book refrigerated vehicles with continuous temperature logging and carriers familiar with pharmaceutical distribution standards. Chemicals from the Meuse valley often fall under dangerous goods rules; for ADR transport we need UN numbers and safety data sheets.

Airport shipments run to fixed windows that depend on flight schedules. When goods must move on immediately after release, express transport by van is usually the right choice.

Tolls, driving bans and documents

Belgium charges a distance-based toll for goods vehicles over 3.5 t in all three regions, including Wallonia, and Germany tolls trucks on motorways and federal roads. Belgium has no general weekend truck ban, but Germany bans heavy trucks on Sundays and public holidays and adds Saturday restrictions in summer, so a Friday afternoon pick-up in Liège usually arrives on Monday. Both countries are in the EU, so there are no customs formalities: a CMR consignment note and an invoice or delivery note suffice, plus temperature records for food and pharmaceuticals.

Practical tips for collections in Liège

  • Liège is French-speaking, while nearby Aachen and Maastricht are not; send the exact address, ideally with GPS coordinates.
  • Port warehouses and terminals work with booked slots, so we agree the time in advance.
  • For airfreight from outside the EU, confirm that customs clearance is complete before collection.
  • Streets in the hilly parts of the city are narrow and steep; small consignees there are often better served by van.
